Caney Valley Academic Teams
Terri Prusator
I have good news regarding the Caney Valley academic teams. With the outstanding performances this past month of the 6th & 7th grade team, as well as the 7th & 8th grade team at their respective regional competitions I'm happy to report that this year all four Caney Valley academic teams, (2 middle school teams, 1 freshman team, and the high school team) have earned invitations to state competition. Martha Ward is coach of the high school teams and I know she has kept you updated on their progress so I'll fill you in on the two middle school teams that I have the pleasure of coaching.
The 6th & 7th grade team hosted 8 teams at their regional competition on February 13. Caney Valley placed second in the tournament behind Nowata who took first place honors. Top scorers in that tournament were Colton C. with 470 points, Jeremiah K. with 180 points, Katie P. with 150 points and team captain, Shawnee S. with 60 points. Other players contributing to the overall success of the team were 7th graders and new team members Michaela D., Kolby M., Austin K., as well as 6th graders Madison M., and Bryre W.
The 7th & 8th grade team placed 4th in their regional competition in Chelsea this past weekend in a field of 12 teams. First place honors went to Chelsea. Brandon M. captained the team and was the top scorer with 310 points, closely followed by Colton C. with 270 points. Also contributing to the point total in the regional competition and providing overall support for the team were Jeremiah K. with 90 points and Jake T. with 40 points, as well as Shawnee S., Katie P., Austin K., Destyni F., and Harley K.
Incidentally, Colton C., a 7th grader, has played a key role in the academic program this year by playing on three teams: the two middle school teams as well as the freshman team. He participated in regional tournaments three weekends in a row during the month of February and was a significant factor in each team's qualification for state.
Both middle school teams play their respective state tournaments in Norman in April.
