D.A.R.E.
October 26, 2011
Every year the 5th graders at Caney Valley participate in the D.A.R.E. program. This is a 10 week program through the Washington County Sheriff's office. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Caney Valley's D.A.R.E. officer is Sheriff Deputy Jon Copeland, he has been a D.A.R.E. off icier for 11 years. The students use a decision making model: Define, Assess, Respond, and Evaluate during the program to make good choices. The students learn things like: Responsible and safe decisions, How drugs affect your body, Peer pressure, Dealing with stressful situations, Basics of communication, Helping others, Bullying prevention, and Influence of the media. The kids enjoy their time learning with Officer Copeland, he uses video's, stories, and group work to help them see the affects of drugs. At the end of the program the Sheriff's department gives them a certificate of completion, so we have a D.A.R.E. Graduation and then a Basketball game (kids vs. adults).
