Academic Team wins 4th place at State!

Saturday the Caney Valley Varsity Academic Team ended their season by placing 4th at the OSSAA State Competition.  They were the 6th seed in the tournament and ended up facing #3 seed Morris in the first round.  They lost a close match 240-280.  Morris later claimed the state championship title.  In the second round, the Trojans defeated the number 2 seed Crossings Christian.  Crossings finished second runner-up last year and were the state champion in 4 out of the last 7 years.  The Trojans came from behind to win the game 210 - 190 and send them home.  Next, the Trojans faced last year's state champions and this year's number 4 seed, Preston.  Preston defeated Caney Valley in the Area Tournament two weeks prior.  The Trojans started out strong and never looked back.  They defeated Preston 250-210 to eliminate them from the tournament.  In round 4 the Trojans face Coalgate, the number 5 seed and last year's 4th place state finisher.  Although the Trojans led after the first quarter and scored more toss-up points, Coalgate outscored the team in the 60-second rounds to win 260 - 220.  Morris finished first, Oklahoma Christian Academy (#1 seed) finished 2nd, Coalgate earned the 3rd place spot, and Caney Valley finished 4th.  There are 96 teams in Class 3A, and it was an extreme honor to represent our school in the elite 8.

Leading the scoring were sophomores Aiden M and Ryan S with 230 and 80 points apiece.  Seniors Ethan F and Carter B tallied 80 and 70 points apiece. Caleb P, Avery T, Matthew Hazelwood, Madison H, McKenna G, Ethan B, and Noah R assisted in 60-second rounds and toss-ups.  Logan W, Steven B, Brodie H, and Hayden T were instrumental as well.

Thank you to Shannon Brown for being an amazing assistant coach as well as scorekeeper and timer and to Dr. Cantrell, the Caney Valley staff, and students for supporting the team.  The band did a fabulous job leading us in the walking pep assembly, and the student body was so enthusiastic.  Your support means the world to us, and we are thrilled to share this accomplishment with you.
