The Caney Valley High School Varsity Academic Team

The Caney Valley High School varsity academic team finished their season Saturday by finishing 3rd at the Area Tournament in Preston.  After beating Mounds 150-110 and Chelsea 300-270, the team faced top seeded Preston in the championship round and lost a heartbreaker 200-180. The Trojans were then pitted against Adair who pulled out the win at the very end 170-130.

Senior Katy L. led the scoring with 140 followed closely behind by Sophomore Dakota J. with 140.  Junior Alex T. added 70 points, and Sophomore Hunter B. added 50.

Coach Martha Ward was impressed by this year's team's dedication and work ethic.  "We lost several key team members from last year, but this year's group has worked harder than any team I've coached during the last 12 years.  Katy was an awesome team captain and such a wonderful role model for my younger students.  She will be greatly missed next year, but I know she will thrive in college as she strives to become a veterinarian."

Included in this year's successes was a first place finish at the Kremlin-Hillsdale Tournament and a championship at the NOC tournament last week in Tonkawa.

Both victories were a first for Caney Valley.

Next in store for the Trojans is the Froshmore Science meet and the 8th/9th grade district tournament.  The Froshmore team has already qualified for the state tournament in March.
